What Happens When Independent Vets Step Out of the Clinic

Beyond Growth – 2026 VetFamily Annual Conference

When independent vets step out of their clinics and into the same room, something shifts.

This year’s VetFamily Member Conference brought together nearly 200 members for three days of open discussion, practical ideas, and shared reality—all as a free event for members.

What we’re all seeing right now

Practices are busy—but not always growing.

Across the network, members are seeing:

  • Declines in visits and vaccinations
  • Unpredictable client behaviour
  • Ongoing economic pressure

Some weeks feel strong. Others don’t.
For many, there’s no clear pattern.

Where the conversation really went

What stood out over the three days wasn’t just what’s happening around practices.

It was what’s happening inside them.

Members spoke openly about:

  • Missed opportunities hidden in everyday workflows
  • The need to communicate value more clearly and consistently
  • Systems that don’t always support the teams using them

These weren’t abstract challenges. They were grounded, practical, and widely shared.

A shift in how people are approaching it

In an unpredictable environment, the focus is changing.

Less emphasis on trying to control external conditions.
More attention on strengthening what sits within the practice.

A few ideas came through again and again:

Clarity builds trust
Clients don’t just want care—they want to understand what they’re paying for and why it matters.

Systems support consistency
Small gaps in process add up. Clear, well-used systems create stability and steady performance.

Experience shapes return visits
The client journey plays a direct role in whether people come back.

Technology should reduce friction
Used well, it saves time and supports better communication.

What people are taking back into their clinics

Not just ideas—but a clearer sense of direction.

Members left with:

  • Practical ways to stabilise performance
  • Greater confidence in how they communicate value
  • Clearer systems to reduce inefficiency
  • A stronger sense of control heading into the year ahead

These are changes that can be applied immediately, without adding complexity.

And maybe the most important part

The openness.

Practice owners sharing what’s working—and what isn’t.
Teams comparing notes.
Conversations that don’t often happen in day-to-day practice, happening in the same room.

Because independence doesn’t mean doing it alone.

It means having the right support, the right perspective, and a community that understands exactly what you’re navigating.
